Florida became the first state in the nation to pass a stand-your-ground law in 2005. The underlying purpose of this law was to allow individuals to use force in self-defense without having to first retreat.<\/p>\n

Florida law allows individuals to use or threaten to use non-deadly force if that person believes this conduct is necessary to defend themselves.<\/p>\n

In order for someone to legally use deadly force against another individual, someone must reasonably believe that the force is needed to prevent either imminent death or great bodily harm. Someone may also use deadly force in order to prevent a forcible felony from occurring.<\/p>\n
